Diabetes & Foot Care
Proper foot care is an important part of diabetes management. In fact, diabetics are at an extremely increased risk of serious foot disorders. Foot problems are the most common diabetes complication leading to hospitalization. Ulcers or sores on the foot can be caused by improper shoe gear that can result in infection and possible amputation.
Many complications can be prevented with early detection, proper intervention, comprehensive management and quality therapeutic footwear.
Studies show that well-fitted diabetic shoes with moldable insoles reduce the development of these ulcers and sores. Our shoes meet Medicare requirements for those with diabetes.
Many of our styles are available in breathable zennon material that gently wraps the foot. People with corns, calluses, and bunions really notice the comfort.
Medicare's Therapeutic Shoe Bill
Since 1993, Medicare Part B has provided partial reimbursement for extra-depth shoes and inserts for qualifying patients with diabetes. Medical experts agree that many amputations resulting from diabetes-related foot complications can be prevented by appropriate, proper fitting footwear. Under this bill, beneficiaries with diabetes can receive one (1) pair of therapeutic shoes and three (3) pairs of inserts per calendar year.
How Much Will Medicare & Supplemental Insurance Cover?
Medicare will reimburse up to 80% of the cost of new shoes and custom inserts. Supplemental insurance may cover the 20% remainder. When there is no supplemental insurance available, payment arrangements or a financial hardship waiver is considered.
